Pets Shed

Pets Shed

pets shedPets shed, especially in the spring and summer when they no longer need their winter coats.  Fortunately, there are several things we can do to help keep our homes clean in spite of it.

First, we can set a little time aside to brush or stroke our pets with grooming mitts.  This allows us to bond with our furry friends, and we can dispose of the pet hair before it ends up on our floors and furniture.

Secondly, we can vacuum frequently.  To remove even more pet hair, try vacuuming from different directions and angles.  If, like me, you personally do not have the time and desire to do this each and every time that you vacuum,  make an effort to do it from different angles every time I do vacuum.  For example: if you vacuum Wednesdays and Saturdays, start in the front of the room the first Wednesday, the back of the room the first Saturday, the right side of the room on the second Wednesday, and the left side of the room on the second Saturday. You’ll be amazed to see how much of a difference changing directions makes!

Wheelchairs & Walkers

When someone in your home uses a wheelchair or a walker, keeping your carpets clean and beautiful can seem impossible. Although wheelchair and walker traffic do present special challenges, most of the care required to keep your carpets looking good is simple and preventive in nature, but regular care and cleaning are essential.

Wheelchairs & Walkers

wheelchairs and walkers can ruin carpets

Are wheelchairs or walkers ruining your carpets?

Following these tips can help keep your carpets beautiful longer even with wheelchairs or walkers:

  1. Place machine washable mats or area rugs at every entrance to your home and on high-traffic areas. For the best results, use two rugs: one outside the door and another inside. Shake out the rugs every week; vacuum them as often as possible and machine wash them as necessary.
  2. Keep a basket with clean towels and wheel cleaning spray at each entrance. Use the towels and cleaning spray to wipe dirt, mud or slush off wheels before it has a chance to soil your carpet.
  3. Clean any spills from the carpet immediately to prevent them from staining. Always test spotting products on a hidden portion of your carpet first and use them according to the instructions on the package.
  4. Try to vacuum your carpet once a week for every person or pet that lives there.  For example, if two people and one cat live in your home, you should try to vacuum three times a week. Frequent vacuuming also helps to stand the carpet’s pile upright and prevents ugly matting.

Ask about our Dry Solutions LLC maintenance program so that your carpets get cleaned frequently and you don’t have to think about it. We can customize it to meet your personal needs and budget.

Carpet Indentations

Carpet Indentations: What can be done about carpet indentations caused by heavy furniture?

When heavy or weight baring furniture is placed on carpets it often creates indentations that aren’t noticed until the furniture is removed.  In some cases, when something very heavy, like a waterbed, is left on a carpet a long time, these dents can be permanent because the carpet fibers themselves have little or no resilience (such as many olefin & polyester carpets), and/or the padding underneath of it has collapsed. However, there are several techniques that can be used to reduce, and sometimes eliminate the appearance of these depressions. This articles explains easy, effective and free ways to remove these indentations.

Method 1: Ice & Fork
Move your furniture to uncover the indentation. Drop one ice cube in each dent. Some dents may require several ice cubes. As the ice melts, the nap of the carpet will begin to lift. Check the results after the ice melts and blot off the water with white paper towels or cloths. At this point, try using a fork to carefully lift up the carpet fibers. Use a slow and gentle touch to avoid damaging the carpet and remember that the entire procedure can be repeated or you can try another technique if necessary.

Method 2: Steam Iron & Butter Knife
For a small dents, like the ones caused by the legs of chairs, try holding a steam iron about 15 cm above the indentation, until it becomes moist. Now gently work the fibers back and forth with the butter knife until they are standing up.

Method 3: Iron & Towel
Dampen a towel and place it on the indentation, then apply gentle pressure with an iron set to a medium high temperature ( cotton/wool or 5 to 6). The heat and moisture combine to lift the carpet fibers.

Remove Wax

Remove Wax

How to safely remove wax from carpets, rugs and furniture.

Wax can be removed from most carpets relatively safely and easily.  It will take a little time and patience, but a regular household iron and paper towels should do the trick.

REMOVE WAX WITH A REGULAR IRON

1. Start by setting the iron to a medium setting that is just high enough to melt the wax, but not hot so hot that it can melt or scorch the carpet.

REMOVE WAX WITH ANY PAPER TOWELS

2. When the iron is ready,  place a paper towel that is folded in half directly over the wax, then place the iron over the paper towel.  The wax will melt and absorb into the paper towel.  If necessary, adjust the heat setting on the iron and watch carefully to avoid damaging the carpet.

3. Simply repeat this procedure until all of the wax is completely absorbed. If you’re worried about starting a fire or scorching the carpeting, you can dampen the paper towel slightly before you place the iron on it.

The same technique can be used to remove wax from upholstery and other fabrics, but you must be extra careful not to burn or damage it.

Remove Blood

Remove Blood

removing blood from carpets

How to safely and easily remove blood from carpets and other textiles.

Fresh blood stains aren’t too difficult to remove from carpets.  You’ll need gloves, some clean white towels or absorbent cleaning rags, ice (yes, frozen water), and some surgical spirit or rubbing alcohol.

Put on the gloves, then just place ice directly over the blood stain, once it liquefies the blood somewhat, clean it up with the towels.  Always work from the edges to the center of the stain with dabbing motions and avoid rough scrubbing that can abrade the carpet.

Repeat until all of the blood is removed: You’ll know it’s all gone when nothing is transferring to the towel or rag.

At this point, you can use a little surgical spirit or rubbing alcohol to disinfect the area, but make sure you test the carpet fibers for colorfastness first.

Dry the area as thoroughly as possible once the blood is gone.  First use towels to absorb as much moisture as possible.  Then either blow dry it using a cool setting or place a fan near it for fast drying.  Do not skip this step! Everything absorbs into and sticks to wet carpets.  The faster a it dries after it is cleaned the better.

If you use this technique to take blood stains off of upholstery or other fabrics, you must be extra careful.  Check the fabric where it cannot easily be seen to make sure that the surgical spirit or rubbing alcohol will not damage it, and make sure you blow dry the  fabric at a cool setting until it is completely dry.

Dealing With Pet Accidents

Dealing With Pet Accidents Wisely.

Why does it seem that as soon as you turn you’re back, Fluffy feels compelled to use your carpet as a toilet?  And, no matter how much you clean, you just can’t get rid of that smell!

While yelling at your pet (not that you, a mature and responsible pet owner, would do that) may help some people relieve a little frustration, it will not solve this problem.  In fact, it may create new ones while harming your relationship with your pet.

But don’t despair, reducing the frequency of accidents, even eliminating them, is possible.  However, it takes some hard work and patience. This is accomplished by locating the accident areas and cleaning them, while training your pet not to do his or her business there anymore.

  1. Start by using your eyes and nose to find the accidents, but be aware that your senses may not suffice.  Consider purchasing a black light. These will even reveal old hidden accidents that you thought were no longer a problem.  You can find one at most home supplies stores and many pet stores.  To use it, turn off all the light and shine it around the room: pet accidents will glow.  Now that you know where the problem is, you can clean it with a quality enzymatic cleaner and get rid of the odor with pet odor neutralizers. These can be purchased at most pet stores and many mass merchandisers.  As soon as you get these products home, follow the manufacturer’s instructions on a low visibility area, such as the inside of the closet.  Dry the test area thoroughly with a blow drier at a cool setting and inspect the test area closely.  If there are no changes to the color or texture of you carpet, you can proceed.  DO NOT SKIP THIS TEST. YOU MUST BE SURE THAT THE PRODUCT IS SAFE FOR YOUR CARPET.
  2. Now that you have your supplies, visit your veterinarian to rule out medical causes for the accidents.  If your pet is healthy, you’re now ready to begin the cleaning and training processes.  But remember that cleaning and training go hand in hand. If you do not clean the area thoroughly your training efforts will be in vane, and if you do not teach your beloved Fluffy the right place to go, you will soon be cleaning new accidents. You can make thing better both of you, if you follow these tips:
  3. Think of ways to make the old accident areas as unattractive as possible or keep them off limits.
  4. Make the appropriate area to eliminate as attractive and available for your pet as possible.
  5. Crate your pet or confine them to a small bathroom when you leave your home.
  6. Use lots of praise and positive reinforcement when your pet goes in the right place.
  7. Use your computer or visit your local library to research topics such as preventing or solving litter box problems, housebreaking puppies, or house training your adult or senior dog.
  8. Clean washable items.  Machine wash as usual, adding half a cup of baking soda along with your regular detergent to each load.  If possible, air dry these items.  If a stain or odor remains,  re-wash the item and add enzymatic cleaner.  Again, carefully following the manufacturer’s directions.
  9. If a bed is Fluffy’s favorite toilet, cover the it with a vinyl, flannel backed tablecloth while training.  It’s machine washable, inexpensive, and unappealing to pets.
  10. To clean carpeted areas after new accidents that are still wet. Pick up as much as possible with paper towels. Use paper towels to soak up urine. The more fresh urine you can remove, the easier it will be to remove the odor.  Place a thick layer of paper towels on the wet spot and stand on it for a minute.  Remove and repeat until the area is barely damp.
  11. If possible, put a little bit of the soiled paper towel where it belongs: your cat’s litter box or your dog’s designated outdoor bathroom area.  This will help your pet to recognize the right place to eliminate.
  12. Rinse the accident area thoroughly with clean cool water. After rinsing, remove as much of the water as possible by blotting or with a wet vac.  Now you can use the enzymatic cleaner according to package directions.
  13. If a stain is already dry, use the enzymatic cleaner followed by the pet odor neutralizer.
  14. Avoid using steam cleaners to clean urine from carpet and upholstery.  The heat can permanently set the stain and odor by bonding the protein into the fibers. See what the Carpet & Rug Institute says about this under the topic Special Tips for Pet Owners.
.We recommend that you avoid using general cleaning chemicals, especially those with strong odors such as ammonia or vinegar. These can actually encourage your pet to scent mark the area.
  15. Keep in mind that neutralizing cleaners can not work efficiently if you have not rinsed every trace of cleaner from the carpet.  In fact, any non-protein-based substance will weaken the effect of the enzymatic cleaner.  The enzymes will work on the old cleaners, instead of on the stain you want removed. if you have any cleaning residue on your carpet you may have to treat your pet stains repeatedly.
  16. If the urine has soaked into the padding.  You must take the drastic measures of  removing that carpet and padding, treating the sub-floor with enzymatic cleaner, and replacing both carpet and padding with new materials, in order to eliminate the odor.
  17. If your furniture, walls, baseboard, or wood floors are discolored, the varnish or paint have reacted with the acid in the urine.  You need to remove and replace that discolored layer, but make sure the new product is safe for pets. Employees at your local hardware or home improvement store should be able to help you find what you need.

Training your pet may take a few weeks, and eliminating pet stains and odors will cost you time and money.  But remember that it took time to build your pet’s bad habit, and it will take time to change it.  Be patient with your pet.  Keep up the positive re-enforcement.  Clean accidents as soon as they happen, and keep up with your professional Dry Solutions LLC cleanings every six months.

Spot Cleaning Upholstery

Keep it bright and beautiful with regular Dry Solutions professional cleaning & fabric protection services.

Be advised that we do not recommend spot cleaning upholstery, unless it is absolutely necessary.

Knowing how to spot clean upholstery safely is essential. If you don’t know how to do it correctly, you can do more harm than good. Following these suggestions will help you keep your furniture looking its best between professional cleanings.

  1. Vacuum your upholstery regularly.  If your furniture is free of dust and debris, the chances of it staining permanently due to a spill or accident are greatly reduced.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s tag for fiber content and safe cleaning instructions. Do not use anything that can permanently damage the fabric.  If your manufacturer’s tag says “dry clean only” or  has an S, P, X, X/S or F code, do not wet it!  These fabrics cannot be safely cleaned with water or water based solutions. Know what the manufacturer’s cleaning code means before you attempt to spot clean it.

Accidents happen

Sometimes things spill, kids puke or fluffy doesn’t make it outside on time. Fitting professional cleanings into our budgets when accidents occur isn’t alway possible. Follow these instructions to lower the risk of doing more harm than good:

  1. Blot spots with dabbing motions working from the edges to the center. Do not rub! Use a clean absorbent white towel.  Do not use a colorful towel or rag because the dyes can bleed onto your fabric.
  2. Once you’ve blotted off as much of the stain as possible, try dabbing the area with unscented baby wipes, repeating until you can no longer see any of the offending substance transfer onto the wipes.  Then, use a blowdryer to dry the fabric completely.  This will help to reduce the possibility of water spots or rings from forming.
  3. If you’ve followed these steps, but still see the spot, and only if the manufacturer tag says it can be wet cleaned (W code), try a little club soda or a high quality fabric spotter. First test the spotter on a low visibility area, making sure you follow the instructions on the label carefully, then blow dry the fabric, until it is completely dry.  If the test shows that the spotter is safe for your upholstery, use it on the spot, and remember to blow dry the fabric afterwards.

Also, remember that furniture manufacturers recommend a thorough professional cleaning at least once a year. If it has been awhile since your last cleaning, this is a good time to schedule your appointment.

You may also want to have us apply genuine 3M-Scotchgard after your cleaning to help prevent your furniture from staining permanently when spills and accidents occur.
