Changing everything in our lives suddenly in attempt to live green, may be more than most of us can handle. We suggest making just one small change or adding one new habit every week. These little things add up to a big difference over time. This week let’s:

Rethink Recycling

Rethink Recycling: reduce, recycle, reuse Revising how we think about recycling to go beyond bottles, cans and paper can save more resources.

More than 100 million American already recycle glass, aluminum, steel, plastic and paper. Those of us who do this can take pride in the fact that we are helping to protect our environment and stimulate our economy. For more information, read: Why Recycle?

This week, lets rethink recycling and go beyond the items we put in blue and yellow bins everyday. When we rethink recycling, we can reduce more waste, reuse more resources and recycle more items. We may also make our world a little happier.

Clothing & Whites

Wearable clothing can go to The Salvation Army, Faith Farm, or any other charity. Women’s business attire that you no longer wear can help promote the economic independence of a disadvantaged woman when donated to programs like Dress for Success.  If you have gently used brand named items and could really use a little money to shop for something that you’ll actually uses, bring it to a consignment shop or Plato’s Closet. Shop at thrift stores and consignment shops for yourself. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Also consider trading clothing with family, friends, fellow church or club members and coworkers to help each other save money.

Unwearable clothes, linens and towels can be donated to local animal shelters like Big Dog Ranch, to use as pet bedding.

Athletic Shoes

Wearable shoes can be donated to many local charities or One World Running, Give Your Sole, Soles 4 Souls and other similar organizations.

Unwearable shoes can be ground down and turned into new places to play when donated to Nike Reuse-a-Shoe.

Sports Goods

Don’t throw it away! Give it to someone who can use it. Trade it or sell it at Play It Again Sports, or donate it to a local charity.

Recycle tennis balls through reBounces.

Appliances & Furniture

Can it be repaired instead of replaced? Can you extend the usable life with a little TLC, such as professional cleaning and maintenance? If you answered “no” both times, don’t throw it out. Sell it or give it away.

Batteries

If possible, use rechargeable batteries. But, all batteries can be recycled by organizations like Battery Solutions.

Buttons

Did you know that even buttons can make a real difference in peoples lives? Hugs and Kisses, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that raises funds for cancer patients in desperate financial need, could recycle your buttons.

Together we can rethink recycling and make a difference.

Toss in the Towel: The Paper Towel

Lets make a commitment to only use paper towels when we really need them.

It happens all the time in most American homes. We grab a paper towel — or two, or three — to wipe up a mess when something is spilled. That’s what paper towels were created for, right?

Many of us also use paper towels for polishing our countertops, cleaning our mirrors or glass surfaces and much more. Yet, even when we wipe, rub and scrub; we still see streaks so we keep going until we’ve not only used up our entire supply of paper towels, but our energy as well.

Have you ever sprayed a mirror or a glass surface with window cleaner and no matter how much you rubbed and scrubbed with a paper towel, you still saw streaks and little swirl marks?

Of course. It happens all the time!

We do not have anything against paper towels. We all use them when we really need them. But there is a better choice when it comes to cleaning many of the surfaces in our homes.

What’s that better choice than a paper towel? A “microfiber” cloth or towel, and it solves many of our cleaning challenges.

Microfibers are wonderful things. They are usually made with polyester, sometimes with other fibers added, and can be reused again and again and again with regular laundering. Just don’t use fabric softener because it leaves a residue on the towel.

The word “micro” is key: Tiny filaments that act like thirsty grime-seeking sponges. Microfibers are soft and eagerly grab dirt, spills and more, leaving the surface sparkling clean. Those shiny surfaces in your home are perfect for microfibers.

Those of us who believes in cleaning “green” and recycling should consider using microfibers. They are environmentally a superior choice. You can purchase them from virtually any store that sells cleaning products. Try them this week. you’ll be glad you did.

Area Rugs

Area Rugs: How to keep them looking great and help them  last longer.

Oriental and designer area rugs can be very expensive. A large one, like an 8×10 or a 9×12 can easily cost well over a thousand dollars. Following these helpful hints and having us professionally clean them at least once a year will help them last longer.

Hint 1: Place an outdoor welcome mat in front of every entrance to your home to act as a receptacle for whatever shoes and wheels drag in.  You may also want to place an inexpensive rug inside. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Shake or beat these mats outside at least once a week.

Hint 2: Vacuum regularly. Frequent vacuuming can work wonders to keep dirt from grinding into your rug and making itself at home there permanently. If possible, try to vacuum once per week for each person or pet in your home.

Hint 3: Go shoeless, but not barefooted. Take off your outdoor shoes when you get home and wear slippers or walk around in your socks.  Lotions and/or natural oils from your feet can transfer to rugs and cause them to soil rapidly.

Hint 4: Freshen your rugs with herbs, spices, and baking soda to keep them smelling good without using artificial chemicals. Make sure your rugs are dry, then sprinkle a little dried thyme, rosemary or lavender mixed with a little baking soda on them. Let it sit a few minutes, then vacuum thoroughly. If you have pets, try a little borax mixed with rosemary to help keep fleas away. But, be very careful while this mixture is sitting, because it can be toxic if ingested.

Hint 5: Shake it and/or beat it every few weeks. If your rug is small enough to move without hurting yourself, take it outside and shake it and/or beat it. to loosen dirt.

Hint 6: Clean up spills and accidents immediately. If you don’t, they are more likely to set and will be much harder to remove. They can even become permanent stains.

Use a clean white towel to remove as much of the spill as possible, and test the rug on an inconspicuous area for colorfastness before you use anything else.

  • Club soda can remove many acidic stains, like coffee, wine, or juice.
  • For greasy stains, blot the stain with isopropyl alcohol or surgical spirits.
  • For juice and berry stains, try a little white vinegar.

Hint 7: Put a pad under it to act as a shock absorber and prevent matting.. If you have a large rug in a high traffic area, this is extra important. Inexpensive pads are available in most home improvement stores and can be ordered online.

Hint 8: Rotate your rug frequently, so it wears evenly.

Hint 9: Remember that rugs and carpet are like giant filters that trap dirt, dust and allergens.  So even if your rugs look good, have us clean them once a year to keep your indoor environment healthy.
